Autumn 2026
Text Mining develops methods for accessing information in and extracting knowledge from large volumes of text. The overall aim of this course is to provide you with practical experience of the main steps of text mining: information retrieval, processing of text data, modelling and analysis of experimental results. The course ends with an individual project where you work on a self-defined problem.
This website has not yet been fully updated for 2026. There will be some updates to the course topics and the labs before the course starts in November. All the general information about the course still applies.
This course has been designed as an on-campus course. We currently do not have any sessions with mandatory attendance, but still do not recommend taking this course remotely. In particular:
- The lab assignments are intended to be worked on and submitted in pairs. We do not have the capacity for the extra workload that comes from students working alone. If you insist on working alone, we cannot promise you timely feedback on your submissions, which means fewer opportunities to fix problems and resubmit.
- The scheduled lab sessions are intended to be the main place to ask questions and get help for the labs, and we test that the labs run on the lab computers. It can take longer to get help via e-mail, and we cannot offer any tech support for problems that arise from students using other computers than the lab environment.
(NB: If you have a documented need for accommodations, e.g. due to a disability, this does not apply to you – please contact the examiner, and we will find the best solution for your individual case!)
On the other hand, the individual project work (starting from week 6 of this course) is well-suited to be done remotely (if you do not want to use the lab computers), and you can also book individual supervision meetings via Zoom.
